Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha 2010

The famous Nehru Trophy Boat race Alappuzha will be held in the Punnamada lake on the 14th of August 2010. It is the most popular boat race in Kerala. The key attraction of the event is the race of Snake Boats, popularly known as Chundan Vallam. Apart from Snake Boats, there will be race of other boats as well, known as Churuttu Vallam, Veppu Vallam and Odi Vallam. Nehru Trophy boat race is an important sports event attracting lots of tourists to Alleppey. The Nehru Trophy boat race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. This year it falls on the 14th of August.

History of the Nehru Trophy Boat race dates back to 1952, when the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alleppey. He was thrilled at the boat race conducted in Alleppey and jumped into  Nadubhagam Chundan, the winning  snake boat in excitement. On his return to Delhi, Nehru donated a trophy made in Silver to the winners of the boat race. It was then decided to conduct the boat race every year in the honor of Jawaharlal Nehru and the race was named Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

Thousands of people visits Alleppey on the day of Nehru Trophy boat race. Chundan Vallam can accommodate more than a hundred people and it is a fiercely fought sports event. The sight of hundreds of people rowing in the same rhythm and trying to make their boat ahead of others is an exciting one.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race Winners

Champakkulam Chundan emerged as the winners of the 57th Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha, Kerala. Captain of Chamakkulam Chundan is  Jiji Jacob of JesusBoat Club, Kollam. Last year also JesusBoat Club, Kollam won the Nehru Trophy  in Karichal Chundan.

3rd Place: Cheruthana
4th Place: Sree Ganesh

Earlier, Congress president Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the 57th Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha. 17 Chundans participated In this years fiercely fought competition.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha

Famous Nehru Trophy Boat race will be held at Alappuzha Punnamada lake this afternoon (8th August 2009). Nehru Trophy boat race is the most popular boat race in Kerala. Known as Nehru Trophy Vallam Kali in Malayalam, this event attracts lots of tourists from India and abroad. Legend of Nehru Trophy Boat race begins from 1952 when the late prime minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Alappuzha.

A speciality of this years boat race is that famous Malayalam film actor Kalabhavan Mani is the captain of one of the boats Karichal Chundan.He has joined the team of Town Boat Club, Kollam. Chief guest of 2009 Nehru Trophy Boat race is Sonia Gandhi, president of Indian National Congress party.

Apart from competition of Snake Boats known as Chundan Vallam, there are other competitions for Veppu, Churulan, Iruttukuthi and Thekkanodi. Tickets for the boat race are available from various Govt. Offices of Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Kottayam Districts and from the Office of the District Tourism Promotion Council

Kerala goes for voting today

Polling started in Kerala today at 07.00 AM. Votes can be polled till 05.00 PM. There are 20 parliament constituencies in Kerala. 2,18,65,324 voters in Kerala will elect 20 MPs today. 217 candidates are contesting from Kerala. This includes the UDF, LDF, BJP, smaller parties and independent candidates. There are 20,508 polling booths in Kerala.

Both the UDF and LDF fronts have stronger expectations from the results. Results will be declared on 16th May 2009. It is such a long wait to know the results. People are looking forward for a stable government which will bring in development to the entire nation. Keralais expecting for a peaceful polling today with the help of 60,000 strong security forces.
