Mammootty

Mammootty is a popular Indian Actor. Mammootty has acted in more than 300 films in Malayalam and Tamil. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1998. He was conferred D.Litt by University of Kerala and University of Calicut. Mammootty is popularly known as Mega Star and Mammukka.

He has acted in many critically acclaimed movies like Mathilukal, Vidheyan, Ponthan Mada, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha etc. He has acted in many commercially successful movies like Pazhassi Raja, Valyettan, Thommanum Makkalum, Rajamanikyam, New Delhi, Oru CBI Diarykurippu etc.

Mammootty has won 3 national awards and 6 Kerala state film awards as best actor. He has won many film fare awards as well as film critics awards.

Mammootty was born in Chembu near Vaikom in Kottayam district, Kerala on 7th September 1953.

Doctorate for Mammootty

Mega Star Mammootty was conferred honorary doctorate today by University of Kerala. In a proud function at the University Senate hall, Thiruvananthapuram, Governor of Kerala, R.S Gavai awarded the D.Litt to Mammootty, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Umayalpuram Sivaraman.

Mammootty said he was very happy to receive honorary doctorate from the University in which he has studied for graduation and post graduation. After receiving the doctorate Mammootty said he is dedicating this degree to his father, whose ambition was to make Mammootty a doctor.

Along with Mammootty, famous Malayalam movie director Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Mridangam Maestro Umayalpuram Sivaraman were also honoured by the University of Kerala.

Yesudas celebrates 70th Birthday

Ganagandharvan Dr. K J Yesudas celebrates his 70th birthday on 10th January 2010. Lovers of Dasettan’s music celebrated the sapthathy (70th birthday) in separate functions held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and the United States.

Sahshi Tharoor presented a Veena as a birthday gift on behalf of Swaralaya in the celebration held at Thiruvananthapuram. Yesudas shared his fond memories about Thiruvananthapuram in the meeting. Earlier in the US a music performance by 70 artists symbolizing the sapthathy was presented before him.

In a simple function held at Kochi, K J Yesudas donated 70 spectacles to the poor. Yesudas sung more than 40,000 songs in various languages. Yesudas was conferred Padma Bhushan by Government of India in 2002.

NRI business man B R Shetty buys two floors at Burj Dubai

Dr. B R Shetty, the managing director and CEO of Abu Dhabi’s first multi-speciality healthcare facility, New Medical Centre (NMC) and the UAE Exchange now owns 100th and 142nd floors of Burj Khalifa, worlds tallest building. Burj Khalifa in Dubai,  is the most sought after address in the world now. B R Shetty, originally from Mangalore, Karnataka has got strong ties with Kerala. He has chosen  Kochi as the head office of UAE Exchange. Dr. Shetty, famous for his philanthropy activities was conferred Padma Sri in 2009.

Shetty has spent around Rs. 122 crores to buy the property in Burj Khalifa. Shetty bought the space for Dirham 3,000 (Rs 38,000) per sqft in Burj Khalifa. Even in the recessionary times, he has got offers up to 12000 Dirham for the property. He said he wouldn’t sell the property for any amount.

UAE Exchange was established in 1980 in UAE. It is now one of the world leading money exchange companies in the world. Shetty employs around 10,000 people in his various businesses. Shetty will take procession of the property in February. It will surely be a proud moment for him.

Indian Science Congress 2010 at Trivandrum

Indian Science Congress Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated the 97th Indian Science Congress in a proud function at Trivandrum on 3rd January 2010. This year the Indian Science Congress is hosted jointly by the University of Kerala and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

97th Indian Science Congress is held at the Kariavattom Campus of University of Kerala. Indian Science Congress is the largest national science event with thousands of delegates participating, exploring, analyzing and interacting on matters of science.

Focal theme of this years Science Congress is Science and Technology challenges of 21st Century – National perspective. Around 7000 delegates are participating in this year’s event.

Kerala Governor RS Gavai, Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan, union ministers Vayalar Ravi, Prithviraj Chavan and Shashi Tharoor and eminent scientists attended the inaugural ceremony. General president of the five-day event is former ISRO chairman Dr. G Madhavan Nair.

This is the first time that Trivandrum is hosting the Indian Science Congress. Unprecedented security arrangements are made in the Kariavattom campus with about 1000 policemen deployed in and around the sprawling campus.

A major attraction at the congress is a science exhibition showcasing the latest scientific developments and achievements in the country.
