Trivandrum Flower Show and Aquarium show 2011 is going on at Kanakakkunnu. The show was inaugurated on 7th January 2011 and will be concluded on 16th January 2011. The Trivandrum flower and Aquarium show has returned to Kanakakkunnu  after a gap of 6 years. Last few years it was at the Observatory hills. The flower show is attracting thousands of visitors everyday. Entry timings to the show is from 08:30 AM to 1:00 PM and from 03:00 PM to 08:30 PM. Entry fee for the flower show is Rs. 20/-. As part of the flower show, there is also a film exhibition at Nishagandhi auditorium from 07:00 PM. The flower arrangements at Kanakakkunnu is a feast to the eyes and refreshment to the mind.

Neyyar Dam Lion Safari Park | Tourist Attractions in Trivandrum

Neyyar DamNeyyar Dam is a popular picnic spot near Trivandrum. It is within 35 Km from Trivandrum city. The major attraction of Neyyar Dam is Lion Safari Park, where 7 lions are housed in their natural habitat. These lions are not bound in cages. Kerala forest department operates special bus through the Lion Safari Park where one can watch lions very closely in their natural surroundings. Other attractions at Neyyar Dam are crocodile park and deer park. Forest department also operates boat cruises through the Neyyar Dam reservoir which is a rejuvenating experience. There is also a park near the dam. Neyyar Dam offers a calm and enjoyable visit to tourists.

How to reach Neyyar Dam

From Trivandrum city, the route to Neyyar Dam is through Pangode – Thirumala – Kattakkada. Neyyar Dam is around 35 Km from the city. KSRTC operates regular bus services from Trivandrum city.
Nearest airport – Trivandrum Airport and Railway station is Trivandrum Central. Neyyar dam is around 10 minutes drive from Kattakkada bus station.

Things to do at Neyyar Dam

Visit Lion Safari Park, Deer Park, Crocodile Park and boating through the Neyyar dam reservoir. It is best to book the lion safari seat in advance.

Best time to visit Neyyar dam is from September to May.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha 2010

The famous Nehru Trophy Boat race Alappuzha will be held in the Punnamada lake on the 14th of August 2010. It is the most popular boat race in Kerala. The key attraction of the event is the race of Snake Boats, popularly known as Chundan Vallam. Apart from Snake Boats, there will be race of other boats as well, known as Churuttu Vallam, Veppu Vallam and Odi Vallam. Nehru Trophy boat race is an important sports event attracting lots of tourists to Alleppey. The Nehru Trophy boat race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. This year it falls on the 14th of August.

History of the Nehru Trophy Boat race dates back to 1952, when the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alleppey. He was thrilled at the boat race conducted in Alleppey and jumped into  Nadubhagam Chundan, the winning  snake boat in excitement. On his return to Delhi, Nehru donated a trophy made in Silver to the winners of the boat race. It was then decided to conduct the boat race every year in the honor of Jawaharlal Nehru and the race was named Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

Thousands of people visits Alleppey on the day of Nehru Trophy boat race. Chundan Vallam can accommodate more than a hundred people and it is a fiercely fought sports event. The sight of hundreds of people rowing in the same rhythm and trying to make their boat ahead of others is an exciting one.

Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple Trivandrum

Trivandrum003 Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is situated at East Fort, the heart of Trivandrum city. Sri Padmanabha Swami temple can be reached from Trivandrum Central Railway station within 1.5 KM. It is within walk-able distance from the East Fort Bus terminus. Sri Padmanabha swami temple is a famous Lord Vishnu temple. The name of Trivandrum in Malayalam is Thiruvananthapuram – it is derived from the name of main deity of the Sri Padmanabha Swami temple.

Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is considered as one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu.

 

Ancient rulers of Travancore were considered as Padmanabha Dasa – servants of Lord Padamanabha. Sri Padmanabha swami temple is still the main temple of ancient rulers of erstwhile Travancore. The temple is managed by the Kingdom of Travancore.

The biggest festival of Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is Laksha Deepam (1 lakh lamps) which is celebrated once  in 6 years. The main annual festival is Navarathri festival. Other important festivals are   Alpashy festival and Painkuni festival. Both these festivals end with Aratt – a holy dip in the sea for the deities.

 

Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. Dravidian architecture of Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is very famous. The temple is around 2000 years old. Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is an important land mark of Trivandrum and a very famous tourist destination in Trivandrum.
