Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha 2010



The famous Nehru Trophy Boat race Alappuzha will be held in the Punnamada lake on the 14th of August 2010. It is the most popular boat race in Kerala. The key attraction of the event is the race of Snake Boats, popularly known as Chundan Vallam. Apart from Snake Boats, there will be race of other boats as well, known as Churuttu Vallam, Veppu Vallam and Odi Vallam. Nehru Trophy boat race is an important sports event attracting lots of tourists to Alleppey. The Nehru Trophy boat race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. This year it falls on the 14th of August.

History of the Nehru Trophy Boat race dates back to 1952, when the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alleppey. He was thrilled at the boat race conducted in Alleppey and jumped into  Nadubhagam Chundan, the winning  snake boat in excitement. On his return to Delhi, Nehru donated a trophy made in Silver to the winners of the boat race. It was then decided to conduct the boat race every year in the honor of Jawaharlal Nehru and the race was named Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

Thousands of people visits Alleppey on the day of Nehru Trophy boat race. Chundan Vallam can accommodate more than a hundred people and it is a fiercely fought sports event. The sight of hundreds of people rowing in the same rhythm and trying to make their boat ahead of others is an exciting one.
