Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is situated at East Fort, the heart of Trivandrum city. Sri Padmanabha Swami temple can be reached from Trivandrum Central Railway station within 1.5 KM. It is within walk-able distance from the East Fort Bus terminus. Sri Padmanabha swami temple is a famous Lord Vishnu temple. The name of Trivandrum in Malayalam is Thiruvananthapuram – it is derived from the name of main deity of the Sri Padmanabha Swami temple.
Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is considered as one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu.
Ancient rulers of Travancore were considered as Padmanabha Dasa – servants of Lord Padamanabha. Sri Padmanabha swami temple is still the main temple of ancient rulers of erstwhile Travancore. The temple is managed by the Kingdom of Travancore.
The biggest festival of Sri Padmanabha Swami temple is Laksha Deepam (1 lakh lamps) which is celebrated once in 6 years. The main annual festival is Navarathri festival. Other important festivals are Alpashy festival and Painkuni festival. Both these festivals end with Aratt – a holy dip in the sea for the deities.
